In 2020 we began tracking school district budget decisions in the wake of the pandemic-triggered financial upheaval, based on news reports and, where feasible, budget and school board documents. This working document aggregated district choices in response to the economic downturn and budget implications related to cuts or labor impacts.
While our effort did not provide an exhaustive national picture, it did offer a hit-or-miss, selective snapshot of a fast-moving situation. And it offered insights into some short-term district actions that could have significant — and, in some cases, troubling — long-term ramifications. You can read about our early findings in this analysis published by The 74.
